Fermented Foods For Gut Health

I’m sure a lot of people know by now that processed junk foods like fast food, conventionally raised meat & dairy, vegetable oils, and refined carbs and sugars aren’t great for our health for many reasons

Probably a lesser known reason is that these foods deplete the beneficial bacteria living in your gut and reduce overall gut diversity. Gut microbial diversity is so important for overall health because all of these little bacteria & microbes have different roles to play (like digesting food and fighting off pathogens) and can make your gut more resilient

So what can help with microbial diversity??

Aside from “eating the rainbow,” adding fermented foods to your diet has been shown to boost microbiome diversity and improve immune response

I have a serving of at least one of the following everyday:

  • dairy-free yogurt
  • kimchi
  • sauerkraut
  • miso

There are tons of other fermented foods to try like tempeh and kombucha, but watch out for how much sugar is added to the typical grocery store kombucha (many have about 20g) because that can do more harm than good
