What's Really In Your Oat Milk?

Is Oatly oat milk worth it?? I say definitely not unless you want to drink canola oil for breakfast

Lets take a look at the ingredients:

  • Rapeseed oil is canola oil which is a highly processed inflammatory industrial oil originally used as engine lubricant in WWII. It’s also heavily sprayed with pesticides so you’re effectively adding chemical laden oil to your coffee or smoothie every morning

  • Dipotassium Phosphate is an additive with zero health benefits that can actually be dangerous for people with many common health issues and can lead to kidney disease. It’s also a sign that the product you’re consuming is heavily processed !!

  • Calcium Carbonate (also known as chalk) is added to fake milks to boost the calcium content, but it can cause gastrointestinal issues like constipation and bloating and is used in the production of building materials and paints

  • Tricalcium Phosphate is an anti-caking agent that can cause similar digestive issues like constipation and nausea

  • Dicalcium Phosphate - while more extensive research is still needed, one study has linked higher phosphorus levels in the blood to increased cardiovascular risk.

Oatly adds 3 different types of phosphates to its milk which isn’t inherently bad, but overconsumption is cause for concern. Many studies have shown that phosphate additives are absorbed in larger amounts than naturally occurring phosphorous, which means there is a greater risk when consuming processed foods (especially on a regular basis)

Three Trees on the other hand is made with all organic and natural ingredients which means it is free of GMOs, pesticides and synthetic additives. It might not be as creamy as the heavily processed Oatly version, but I would much rather avoid all of the unnecessary and inflammatory additives

I’m also a fan of just plain coconut milk in a can or other plant-based milk options like Lavva or Malk. If you can tolerate dairy, than raw grass-fed cows milk is another great option
